The International day for the elimination of violence against women is observed on 25 november. The day is remembered in the honor of Mirabal sisters, three social activists of the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered. Their only crime was being women and activists fighting for their rights in front of the Dominican dictator, Rafael Trujillo.

The “UNiTE to End Violence against Women” campaign, led by the UN Secretary-General and UN Women since 2008, aims to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls globally. The campaign emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts, policy changes, and resources to support survivors and promote gender equality, striving for a world where women and girls can live free from violence and discrimination.

Violence against women remains a critical human rights issue that takes various forms, including physical, sexual, and psychological violence. It affects women of all ages, backgrounds, and social statuses, and its repercussions extend to families, communities, and societies at large. The day emphasizes the importance of addressing the root causes of violence, promoting gender equality, and creating a world where women can live without fear of violence or discrimination.

Numerous events, campaigns, and initiatives are organized on this day to spread awareness, advocate for policy changes, and provide support for survivors. These efforts aim to challenge harmful gender norms, promote education and empowerment, and provide resources for women who have experienced violence. The day also serves as a platform to remember and honor victims of gender-based violence and to recognize the resilience and strength of survivors.

Through education, advocacy, and the implementation of comprehensive policies, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women seeks to foster a world where women can live with dignity, respect, and safety. It calls for collective action to create a society where gender-based violence is not tolerated and where women can fully participate in all aspects of life without the fear of violence or discrimination.
